This hanging trio of hearts decoration is by Anne Egan and originally appeared in issue 52 of Simply Crochet. It’s a nice quick project that you can hook up while eating those special choccys and watching your favourite slushy film!

Heart decoration

You will need:

  • Rooster Almerino Aran (50% baby alpaca, 50% merino, 50g/94m), 1 ball of each:
  • Yarn A Brighton Rock (307),
  • Yarn B Rooster (310)
  • A 5mm (US H/8) hook
  • Toy filling

Measurements

Finished drop measures 45cm (173⁄4in)

Abbreviations

Spiked dc (spiked double crochet) Work a double crochet st into st indicated, one row below.

Notes

3 hearts are lightly stuffed and attached tog to make one door decoration. When changing colour, join yarn in last yrh of previous st.

Large Heart (Make 2)

Using Yarn A, make a crochet magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch2 (counts as htr), (4tr, dtr, ch1, dtr, 4tr) into the ring, ch2 (counts as htr), ss into the ring, pull ring closed. [2 htr, 8 tr, 2 dtr, 1 ch] Drop Yarn A to WS, join Yarn B.

Round 2 Ch1, spiked dc into magic loop, dc around post of beg ch-2 from Round 1, (dc, htr) in next tr, (tr, ch1, tr) in next tr, (2tr in next tr) twice, tr in next dtr, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-1 sp, tr in next dtr, (2tr in next tr) twice, (tr, ch1, tr) in next tr, (htr, dc) in next tr, dc around post of last ch-2 of Round 1, ss to top of spiked dc. Drop Yarn B to WS, pick up Yarn A.

Round 3 Ss in next dc, dc in next dc, htr in next htr, 2tr in next tr, ch1, 3tr in next ch-1 sp, *ch1, skip next 3 tr, 3tr between skipped tr and next tr**; rep from * to **, ch1, skip next 3 tr, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * to ** twice more, ch1, skip next 3 tr, 3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1, 2tr in next tr, htr in next htr, dc in next dc, ss in next dc, ss to yarn join. Drop Yarn A to WS, pick up Yarn B.

Round 4 Ss in next ss, ss in next dc, (dc, htr) in next htr, 2tr in next tr, tr in next tr, *(3tr, ch1, 3tr) in next ch-1 sp, ch1; rep from * once more, (3tr in next ch-1 sp, ch1) twice, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-2 sp, (ch1, 3tr in next ch-1 sp) twice, **ch1, (3tr, ch1, 3tr) in next ch-1 sp; rep from ** once more, tr in next tr, 2tr in next tr, (htr, dc) in next htr, ss in next dc, ss in next ss. Pick up Yarn A. Fasten off Yarn B. Round 5 Ch1, dc2tog over last and first st of prev round, dc in each st around (including all ch sps), (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp at point of heart. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Small Heart (Make 2)

Follow all instructions as given for Large Heart to end of Round 2. Drop Yarn B to WS, pick up Yarn A, dc2tog over the last and first st of Round 2, dc in each st to ch-1 sp, 2dc in ch-1 sp, dc in each st to st before ch-2 sp, skip next st, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, skip next st, dc in each st to ch-1 sp, 2dc in ch-1 sp, dc in each st to end, ss to first dc2tog. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Middle Heart (Make 2)

For Yarn A use Rooster; for Yarn B use Brighton Rock . Follow all instructions as given for Large Heart to end of Round 3.

Drop Yarn A to WS, pick up Yarn B and work Round 5 of Large Heart.

To Finish

With WS together stuff and pin around the edge of the Large, Middle and Small Hearts. Using Brighton Rock, ch50, ss in first ch and in centre top of Large Hearts, dc in each dc around and (dc, ch1, dc) in the ch-2 sp at point of hearts, ss to first ss. Fasten off. Join at point of Large Heart, ch13, ss to centre top of Middle Hearts, dc in each dc around and (dc, ch1, dc) in ch-2 sp at point of Heart, ss to first ss. Fasten off. Join at point of Middle Heart, ch10, ss to centre top of Small Hearts. Dc in each dc around and (dc, ch1, dc) in ch-2 sp at point of heart, ss to first ss. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
