17 bullet journal ideas from mood trackers to gratitude lists

Bullet journaling is a fun and creative way to organise your life, and there are lots of different ways to do it. Whether you’re a seasoned journal writer or you’re completely new to it, the main thing to remember is to keep it simple. If your layout is too complicated to fill in, you’re unlikely to stick with it.

That’s not to say you can’t make it colourful and lovely to look at! We’ve got plenty of bullet journal ideas for you to try, including classics like daily and monthly logs, as well as creative and wellbeing spreads such as gratitude lists, habit trackers, reading logs and travel planners.

The original idea for bullet journaling came from Ryder Carroll, who invented a rapid logging system that you can use to keep track of your to-do list, events, thoughts and anything else going on in your life. If you’d like to learn more about the method and getting started, take a look at our guide to bullet journaling.

Planning & productivity bullet journal ideas

1. Monthly calendar

If you’re new to bullet journaling, a monthly calendar is a great place to start. This example shows you how to create a grid-style layout, with an extra page for notes and key things to keep track of.

Remember, you can be as creative as you like and tailor your calendar to suit your schedule.

2. Weekly log

A weekly log is a great way to visualise your tasks for the week ahead. It gives you an overview without needing as much detail as a daily log.

3. Daily log

If you prefer to focus on just one day at a time, a daily log might be the right fit for you. It’s especially useful if you have a busy schedule or want space to record your daily thoughts.

Since this log will likely take up a big part of your journal, it’s best to keep it simple. This video shows just how easy it is to set up your daily log and get started.

4. Travel planner

Got a holiday coming up? Planning it in your bullet journal is a great way to stay organised. Make a list of places to visit and things to do, or add packing lists and helpful reminders to keep everything on track.

5. Mood tracker

A mood tracker is a great way to see how your mood shifts over the month and spot any patterns in what makes you feel good, or not so good.

There are loads of creative ways to do it, and most use colour to indicate mood. This cloud design, for example, uses a raindrop for each day, with a colour-coded key to match your mood. Just fill in a drop each day to build a picture of how you’re feeling over the month.

6. Sleep log

Like a mood tracker, you can track sleep using a chart and colour key. This grid layout makes it easy to see how many hours of sleep you got each night during the month. It’s a simple way to spot patterns in your sleeping habits.

7. Gratitude list

Writing down what you’re thankful for is a simple but powerful way to appreciate the little things and feel more grounded.

This sweet honeycomb and bee design turns your gratitude list into a cheerful collage. Simply fill each honeycomb with something you're grateful for. It’s the kind of page you’ll love looking back on.

8. Daily affirmations

Daily affirmations work best first thing in the morning, helping you start the day with a positive mindset. You could write a daily list like the one below, or you could combine it with your mood tracker and add one affirmation each day of the month.

9. Habit tracker

To achieve a goal, especially a long-term one, you need to create habits. A habit is a small action you do regularly that, over time, helps you move closer to your bigger goal.

For example, if your goal is to run a 5k, you might start by jogging once a week, gradually increasing your sessions as you work towards your goal.

10. Doodle-a-day challenge

If you want a more arty bullet journal, then a quick doodle a day can be a fun way to liven up your journal. Your doodle could be something that reminds you of that day, for example, a delicious meal, a pretty flower that you saw, or what the weather was like. The only limit is your imagination.

Keep track of the weather and the temperature as a daily log in your bullet journal. In the video below, you’ll see that a colour grid is used with the corresponding key. It’s so quick and simple to fill in each day and adds a lovely colourful page to your journal.

13. Favourite things from the year

Add a spread at the end of the year to celebrate your favourite memories and moments. Or, if you prefer, create one each month to capture those special highlights as you go.
