If you're looking to create an eye-catching feature on a budget, you can't go wrong with a flower wall. They're everywhere these days, from Stacey Solomon's kitchen, to living walls on display at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. They sure make an impact!

Whether you use it as a backdrop at special events or style it at home, DIY flower walls look super effective, and are actually really simple to make.

Before you get started on your own flower wall, here's everything you need to know.

What is a flower wall?

A flower wall is a type of backdrop that is made by attaching large quantities of fresh or faux flowers to a panel of wire mesh. Flower walls are often used at events, such as parties or weddings, to zone a space or provide an aesthetic background for photographs.

Flower walls are also used in people’s homes as an alternative to traditional feature walls, adding interest, colour and texture to a living room, bedroom or even dining room. It taps into the enduring bring-the-outside-in aesthetic that makes us feel like we are immersed in nature.

How much do flower walls cost?

The overall price of a flower wall will depend on the size of the wall and whether it is made with fresh or faux flowers, but artificial flower wall tiles tend to start at a price of around £12 each. A complete, professionally made flower wall can cost anything from £500 (for a 4ft by 4ft wall) to upwards of £10,000.

DIY flower wall: how is it done?

To make your own flower wall, you will need:

  • Fake or real flowers with at least 3 inch stems
  • Wire mesh (sized dependent on how large you’d like the wall)
  • Garden wire
  • Wall hanger

As mentioned above, you can use fresh flowers to make your wall, but faux flowers are a more cost-effective option because they last much longer and can be purchased online, in bulk.

We recommend using a mixture of large and small flowers to give your wall a full, natural look, but the colours and styles you choose are totally up to you... get creative!

You will need:

  • Flowers (fake or real with at least 3 inch stems)
  • Wire mesh ((sized dependent on how large you’d like the wall))
  • Garden wire
  • Wall hanger

Step 1

Arrange the flowers into piles of the same colour, so you can evenly distribute them as you build out your flower wall.

Step 2

Starting from the outside, thread the flowers through the metal mesh panel and secure them as you go along using the garden wire to help hold them in place.

Step 3

Work your way inwards, making sure to vary the colours so there’s a natural mix of colours.

Step 4

Once your panel is full, add your choice of wall hanger and secure this to the back of the panel, so you can attach it to the wall or the rail (depending on where you’d like your flower wall to go).
