Wallace & Gromit Cracking Crochet book review

Wallace & Gromit Cracking Crochet book

More cheese Gromit? Britain’s favourite clay-mation characters have made a return in crochet form in the brilliantly titled Cracking Crochet.

You’ll find patterns for 12 of the iconic Wallace and Gromit characters from across the award-winning films, including Feathers McGraw from The Wrong Trousers, Fluffles from A Matter of Loaf and Death, The Cooker and Rocket from A Grand Day Out, and of course Shaun the Sheep from A Close Shave.

You’ll also be able to make the duo themselves, with a few different patterns to add variation. For example, Wallace can be made in his classic outfit, in his overalls or in his baker's outfit (which Gromit can model too).

Gromit can also be made in a standing position or on all fours, as well as in his famous yellow raincoat and hat. These variations and different characters give you 17 unique crochet patterns in total.

Wallace and Gromit Cracking Crochet Contents

The crochet characters range in size from the smallest (Shaun the Sheep), measuring 9.5cm/3¾in tall, right up to Piella Bakewell who measures 25cm/10in tall.

Designer Sarah-Jane Hicks has brilliantly brought these Wallace and Gromit characters to life in these crochet renditions, which involve plenty of interesting shaping and finishing touches to keep crocheters entertained (we love the removable rubber glove for Feathers McGraw). The character variations are a really nice touch, and kids will love being able to play with a whole set of characters.

Sarah-Jane Hicks was also the designer behind the crochet pattern book that accompanied the latest Aardman film – Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: Im-peck-able Crochet.

There is a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the specialist stitches used including full colour pictures, as well as how to complete some of the trickier finishing techniques such as the eyes.

Who is Wallace & Gromit Cracking Crochet suitable for?

Wallace-and-Gromit

The Cracking Crochet book is a must for Aardman and amigurumi fans, but it does require some prior knowledge of the basic crochet stitches.

In order to achieve the amazing details that give these crochet Wallace and Gromit characters their likeness, there are some quite intricate techniques used such as surface crochet and embroidery stitches. There are, however, useful full-colour tutorials for these more tricky techniques.

All of the crochet characters in this book are made using either a 2.5mm or 3mm hook, which aren’t too difficult to use but good to be aware of if you prefer using bigger hooks.

Because of these factors we’d say that if you’ve never picked up a crochet hook before, then this book is probably a bit too advanced for now (you’ll get there though). However, if you’re a relatively confident crocheter already then this book is brilliant for developing your skills and learning new techniques.
