This pumpkin-themed matching hat and booties set is just perfect for autumn and Halloween! This cute free pumpkin hat knitting pattern has a wide ribbed pattern which looks just like the ribbed skin of a juicy pumpkin, while also ensuring a snug fit.

The fun booties are a perfect match for the hat, too. Knitted in easy garter stitch, they have a soft and gentle fit around the foot to avoid squashing tiny toes.

Making up your free pumpkin hat knitting pattern

With right sides together and matching colour changes, oversew the side edges of the main hat and the stalk on the wrong side of the work.
Sew the gap between the leaf stem and the base of the stalk neatly.
Turn the hat to the right side.
Neaten the loose yarn ends of the leaf, making sure to fasten them off securely.
Ladder stitch the straight portion of the first and last leaf to the sides of the leaf stalk.

Knit 3 rows.

Knit 9 rows.
Row 14: Kfb, knit to last 2 sts, Kfb, K1. 8 (9: 10) sts.

Row 24: Kfb, knit to last 2 sts, Kfb, K1. 10 (11: 12) sts.
Knit 11 (19: 27) rows.

With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles and yarn A, starting at the cast-off edge of the heel, pick up and knit 13 (15: 16) sts from the inner edge of the left side of the bootie, knit across the 4 (5: 6) sts from the safety pin, then pick up and knit 13 (14: 16) sts from the inner edge of the right side of the bootie.
30 (34: 38) sts.
Work 9 (11: 13) rows in single rib (K1, P1; repeat to the end of the row).
Change to yarn B and 4mm needles.

Next row: Purl.

Making up your booties knitting pattern

Join the back seam of the booties, matching colours, and remembering that the top portion of the booties (from the colour change rows in the centre) will be folded over, so that the right side will be reversed, and therefore will need to be sewn on the opposite side to the lower portion. Oversew the lower portion of the upper shoe to the sole. Finish leaf in the same way as the leaf on hat.
