Keep kids entertained this autumn with these 10 fun and free hedgehog crafts for kids

As the nights draw in and we start to hunker down for winter, it's the perfect time to try some fun hedgehog crafts for kids. Hedgehogs are both cute and mysterious animals that really capture kids' imaginations, and the fact that they are rarely seen only adds to the fascination.

November is the time when hedgehogs will be preparing to hibernate, only returning between March and April. What many people don't know is that they will still leave their nest from time to time to forage for food during hibernation, and it's not uncommon for them to change nesting sites during the winter (so don't panic if you see one out and about).

While this beautiful animal is an iconic part of the British landscape, the Wildlife Trust estimates that its population has declined by between 30%-75% since 2000. Hedgehogs are now being classed as vulnerable to extinction. This is why it's important to teach future generations about these lovely creatures, so we've rounded up 10 fun and free hedgehog crafts for kids!

If you want to teach your kids more about hedgehog preservation, you should check out the hedgehog street project. You can also find loads of helpful advice from the Wildlife Trust on saving hedgehogs, including actions you can take in your own garden.

Make an autumn leaf hedgehog

Save the page with a hedgehog bookmark

If your kids love nothing more than getting stuck into a good book, then they'll love this free hedgehog corner bookmark project from RedTedArt. It involves making a very basic origami bookmark out of brown paper with a bit of cutting to transform it into a cute hedgehog. This project does require adult supervision if very little children are doing the cutting out.

Make a prickly pompom

Hedgehogs are known for their prickly spines, but these pompom hedgehogs are so soft you won't want to stop stroking them. Don't worry if you don't have a pompom maker, as the pattern includes a template so that you can make your own out of card.

Turn an old book into a hedgehog

Recycle your toilet roll tubes

There's one craft supply that every house in the nation can get its hands on – toilet roll tubes! These cardboard tubes are often used in all sorts of craft projects, and you can even use them to make this toilet roll tube hedgehog. You'll even find a handy video showing you how it's done!

Make a prickly potato

Raid your kitchen cupboards for a potato and some seeds, because everyone will want to make this cute potato hedgehog. The video recommends melon seeds but we think sunflower seeds will work just as well. If you don't have any googly eyes to hand you can always draw them on with a sharpie.

Remember to keep an eye on where your kids put their potato hedgehog though, otherwise you're likely to find a smelly rotting potato somewhere in the future.

Create a cute hedgehog brooch
