Earthy living room ideas to make your space cosy and inviting

As we move closer to winter and into the colder months, we naturally spend less time outdoors. We're less exposed to the natural colours of trees, plants and grass, which can make wintertime feel a little drab.

Incorporating an earthy tone to your home decor can make you feel more connected with nature while bringing a rich and grounded atmosphere to your space.

'Creating an earthy living room can help to create a strong connection to nature from the comfort of your home,' explains interior design expert Ethan Fox, from Furniture World. 'Creating nature-connected spaces is referred to as biophilic design, and it can be extremely beneficial for bringing a grounded and calming atmosphere to your living space.'

How to make your space feel grounded with these earthy living room ideas

What is an earth tone?

Earthy tones take inspiration from nature and the outdoors; it's all about bringing a touch of the outside in. When decorating, this means choosing colours that reflect the natural world. Look out for rich browns, mossy greens, dark oranges, terracottas, and warm neutrals.

Choose an earthy tone for your walls

This olive shade from Paint Zero perfectly captures the essence of earthy tones. The rich hue blends green with a subtle golden undertone, giving your living room the feeling of a sunlit forest.

You don't have to fully commit to a bolder colour to achieve an earthy look. 'Layering different tones can create an authentic, nature-inspired colour palette,' explains Ethan.

'For instance, combining warm neutral shades, like creamy sands and warm beiges, with richer, grounded tones such as olive greens, rusty oranges and deep browns creates the perfect earthy base for your living room,' he adds.

A beautiful example of this can be seen in @yssinteriordesign’s living room below, where contrasting colours work together without one overpowering the others.

If you want to introduce brighter colours into your scheme, small pops can work even within an earthy palette. This light, earthy living room by @prettylittleterrace strikes the perfect balance between natural and uplifting, combining rich greens with soft pinks.

Embrace small touches of nature throughout the room

When choosing decor in your earthy living room, opt for natural materials like wood, metal, and natural fibres. Plants are an easy addition to any room, and a big part of billophic design.

'Houseplants don’t just look beautiful, they improve air quality, boost mood, and make spaces feel alive,' says Jo Lambell, CEO of Leaf Envy and founder of Beards & Daisies.

'People are drawn to earthy, plant-filled interiors because they feel cosy and quite timeless, offering a connection to nature that’s especially comforting in the darker winter months,' she adds.
