Hook a rainbow coat for your four-legged friend with this free crochet dog coat pattern by Fran Morgan. It covers the back and joins across the belly, so your pooch can still move freely while showing off their new crochet coat!

You will need

Kauni Effektgarn (100% wool, 150g/600m), 1 ball of Yarn A Variegated (Ex)

Kauni Unicolour (100% wool, 150g/600m), 1 ball of Yarn B Cream (NN1)

A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook

A 4mm (US G/6) hook

If you're struggling to get hold of the Kauni yarn that this pattern was designed in, you can substitute it for an alternative 4ply yarn - we'd recommend the West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply range!

Tension

22 sts and 14 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over htr using a 3.5mm hook or size required to obtain tension

Each bone pattern motif repeat of 16 sts and 9 rows measures 7x4cm (2¾x1½in)

Notes

Body is worked in two pieces. The Upper Body with the bone border lies over the dog’s back. The Lower Body fits under the dog’s belly, and is joined to the Upper Piece at each side at the wider end, to leave two spaces for the dog’s front legs. A collar is worked in the round to join the neck end of the two pieces. As with any accessories for pets, please take care to ensure your pet is comfortable and that their movement is not restricted. This coat has been designed for smaller dogs like the one pictured.

Abbreviations

You can find a full list of all abbreviations we use in our abbreviations and conversions guide. This free crochet dog coat pattern is written in UK terminology but you can easily convert it to US terms using the guide.

Charts

Each square on the chart counts as a dc stitch. Read all rows on the Chart from right to left, repeating the sts on the Chart around. When changing colour mid-row, twist the ends of the two colours together. Pick up the new colour in the last yrh of the previous stitch. Carry the unused strands of yarn across the WS of the work.
