Make your gifts extra special with our knitted gift bags

Make a special gift even more personal with a pretty handmade bag to put it in. Our sweet knitted gift bags pattern is quick to make in DK yarn, so they'd be great for party favours, and at 12cm long they're just the right size to hold a piece of jewellery or a handful of wrapped sweets. Embellish them with beads and ribbons for a truly personal touch and give with love!

You will need:

  • Patons Diploma Gold DK (55% wool, 20% nylon, 25% acrylic, 50g/120m), 1 ball each of Cream (6142) and Blue (6220)
  • A pair of 3¾mm knitting needles
  • Matching narrow ribbon
  • Small pearl beads
  • Shell heart-shaped beads
  • Blunt-ended sewing needle for threading ribbon

Knitted gift bag pattern

Measurements

12cm or 4 3⁄4in long, when folded and sewn together

Abbreviations

This pattern uses our standard knitting abbreviations.

Gift bag 1

Using chosen colour and 3.75mm needles, cast on 27 sts.

Work eight rows in moss stitch.

Work in stocking stitch with moss stitch panel as follows:

Row 1 K10, moss stitch 7, K10.

Row 2 P10, moss stitch 7, P10.

Repeat last two rows five more times.

Now proceed in st st over all stitches until piece measures 20cm or 8in from beginning.

Change to moss stitch and work a further eight rows.

Cast off.

Gift bag 2

Using appropriate colour and 3.75mm needles, cast on 27sts.

Work eight rows in moss stitch. Change to st st and work 14 rows, ending with a purl row.

***Work two rows in moss stitch.

Work four rows in st st.

Work two rows in moss stitch.***

Continue by working in stocking stitch for a further 12 rows.

Repeat from *** to ***.

Now continue in st st for a further 14 rows.

Change to moss stitch for eight rows, and cast off.

Making up

With right sides facing inside, fold in half lengthwise, and join the two side edges neatly. Turn right sides out. Using a blunt-ended needle, thread the ribbon through the knitted fabric around the top of the bag, and tie at the centre front. Sew the pearl beads onto the bottom of the bag, or alternately sew on the heart shell beads around the bottom of the bag, as shown in the photograph.
