With Christmas getting closer, it's nearly time to get yourself an advent calendar. And as much as we love chocolate, there's one thing we love even more: yarn!
Yarn advent calendars have really taken off in recent years, and come in all shapes and sizes. They can range from calendars with 24 mini skeins of yarn to celebrate the lead up to Christmas, to ones that contain multiple elements to help you make a final project. This craft Advent calendar from haberdashery and sewing company Hemline gives you 24 days of sewing and craft gifts in a nicely presented calendar box. It’s more catered towards sewing, but there’s plenty of fun gifts that all crafters can make use of.

3. 24 day yarn Advent calendar – £39.65
Onto our first yarn Advent calendar, and these ones produced by Sabine Winter come in a range of various options depending on your budget and style/yarn choices.
They contain either 10g or 20g mini skeins or balls of yarn. They largely feature 4ply yarn, although there is a DK option available, and the yarns come from a few different producers.
It’s packaged in a lovely box, however, it isn’t one where the gifts are behind individual doors, so you will see everything once you open it – but we think making something each day with your new yarn is fun enough anyway!

6. Alterknit Universe 2023 Advent calendar – £50
Coming in bang on the £50 mark, this is a fabulous way to enjoy a yarn Advent calendar as well as supporting a bricks and mortar yarn store (just outside our base in Bristol).
This yarn Advent calendar comes with 24 individually wrapped 10g marled mini cakes, plus a special 100g yarn cake (we’d definitely save that one for some Christmas day making), with a few extra goodies thrown in to celebrate the season.
The yarn is also recycled. Multiple strands of thin yarn from old knitting machine cones are combined to create interesting and colourful marled yarn that’s suitable for hand knitting.

7. Kaleidoscope 2023 yarn Advent calendar – £56
If you’re all about bright and colourful yarn, then we think you’ll love this Kaleidoscope Advent calendar by Wonderful Wool.
This year’s Kaleidoscope theme means you’ll get some fabulous semi-solid, variegated and speckled colours in the 10g hand-dyed daily mini skeins, all of which are individually wrapped.
