This fabulous design by Sarah-Jane Hicks is the perfect Halloween accessory for parents and children to enjoy together.

We’ve kept this design plain and made in a petrifying purple shade, but if you’re a confident crocheter you could try hooking it in black. It’s also great for adding on extra embellishments, like using our free crochet spider web pattern to bring some extra Halloween spookiness.

Things you’ll need to know about this witch hat crochet pattern

This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds. It helps to mark the end of each round with a stitch marker as you go round.

Making large circles when crocheting in the round can produce a hexagon shape. This pattern uses a method to make a more circular brim by staggering the increases between rounds.

Measurements for this pattern

Both measurements are for the pointed section before the brim is added.

Adult hat circumference: 51cm/20in, height 34cm/13.5in
Child hat circumference: 42cm/16.5in, height 28cm/11in

How to adjust the size of this free witch hat crochet pattern

Step 1

Follow the pattern for the adult hat until the pointed section fits, ensuring that the stitch count divides by six e.g. 42sts, 48sts, 54sts (to make a larger hat keep increasing in a similar manner until it fits).

Step 2

Work 4 more rounds without increasing (for a taller hat work in rounds until you reach the required height).

Step 3

When adding the brim just remember to increase the number of sts on each round by six.

For example, if you have 54sts on the pointed section you will need to increase to 60sts on the next round for the brim and 66sts on the next, etc.

You can make the brim as big or as small as you like by increasing in a similar manner until you reach the required size.
