Free heart brooch crochet pattern
Make your valentine a personalised brooch with this free crochet heart pattern!

Here's the perfect project for Valentines day - crochet one for you and one for a darling who deserves a bit of handmade love. Alternatively, be a rebel and stitch a little tattoo-esque message of your own invention (‘Mum’ is a classic). This free crochet heart pattern by Lucy Croft is worked in two stages using amigurumi dc stitches in a spiral. Really, what could be simpler? Be still our hooky hearts! You will need
Any DK cotton in red - we'd recommend these mini balls of Sirdar Happy Cotton DK
A 3.5mm (US e/4) crochet hook
Stitch marker
White felt
Black embroidery floss
Two brooch backs
embroidery needle
Measurements
Each crochet heart measures 6 x 6cm (2½ x 2½in)
Abbreviations
Dc3tog (Insert hook in the next st, yrh and pull through) 3 times, yrh and pull through all loops on the hook

Notes
This free crochet heart pattern is worked using the amigurumi method: work in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. You do not need to turn the work at the end of each round.
You may find it helpful to place a marker in the first st of each round and move it up as you work.
Free heart brooch crochet pattern

Heart (First piece)
Make a crochet magic loop.
Round 1 (RS) 6dc into loop. [6 dc]
Round 2 2dc in each dc around. [12 dc]
Round 3 Dc in each dc around.
Round 4 (2dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts) twice. [14 dc]
Rounds 5-6 Dc in each dc around. Fasten off.
Heart (second piece)
Make a crochet magic loop.
Rounds 1-6 Work as for Rounds 1-6 of first piece - do not fasten off.
Round 7 With the working yarn and hook still in the second piece, pick up the first piece and work the following round around the first piece to join the two together; dc in any st of first piece, dc in next 5 dc, dc2tog, dc in next 6 dc, now continue working around the second piece from the next unworked stitch; dc in the first 6dc, dc2tog, dc in the next 6 dc. [26 sts]
Round 8 (Dc in the next 5 sts, dc3tog, dc in the next 5 sts) twice. [22 sts]
Round 9 Dc in each dc around. [22 sts]
Round 10 (Dc in the next 4 sts, dc3tog, dc in the next 4 sts) twice. [18 sts]
Round 11 (Dc in the next 3 sts, dc3tog, dc in the next 3 sts) twice. [14 sts]
Round 12 (Dc in the next 2 sts, dc3tog, dc in the next 2 sts) twice. [10 sts]
Round 13 Dc in each dc around.
Round 14 (Dc in the next st, dc3tog, dc in the next st) twice. [6 sts]
Round 15 (Dc in the next st, skip the next st) 3 times. [3 sts]
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Embellishments
Using the image below as a guide, cut out one white felt shape for each heart.
With the embroidery needle and floss, carefully stitch on the letters using the image below as a guide.
To finish, sew a brooch back securely to the back of each crochet heart.
