Celebrate the changing season with a pair of cheery mandalas in cool cotton and vibrant spring colours! They’re perfect as decorative doilies for your easter table, or try using them as mats and coasters!

You will need

  • Phildar Phil Coton 4 (100% cotton, 50g/85m), 1 ball of each:

  • A 4mm (US G/6) hook
  • Tapestry needle

Measurements

Large mandala: approx 24cm (91⁄2in) diameter
Small mandala: approx 10cm (4in) diameter

Abbreviations

2-tr cluster (Yrh, insert hook in space indicated, yrh and pull up loop, yrh and draw through 2 loops) twice, inserting the hook in the same space each time, yrh and pull through all loops on hook

3-tr cluster As above, working () 3 times

ttr2tog (Yrh 3 times, insert hook in next space, yrh and pull up loop, yrh and draw through 2 loops 3 times) twice, yrh and pull through all loops on hook

Notes

Rounds 10-12 are worked using the tapestry crochet method; change colour in last yrh of prev st and work dropped yarn inside sts until required.

Large Mandala Pattern

Using Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch4 (counts as tr, ch1), (tr, ch1) 11 times into loop, ss into 3rd ch of beg ch-4 to join. Fasten off. [12tr, 12 ch-1 sp]

Round 2 Join Yarn B in any ch-1 sp, ch1 (does not count as st), (dc, ch2) in same ch-1 sp and each ch-1 sp around, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [12 dc, 12 ch-2 sp]

Round 3 Join Yarn C in any ch-2 sp, ch3, 2-tr cluster in same ch-2 sp, ch3, (3-tr cluster in next ch-2 sp, ch3) 11 times, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. Fasten off. [12 3-tr clusters, 12 ch-3 sp]

Round 4 Join Yarn B in any ch-3 sp, ch1 (does not count as st), (dc, ch3, dc) in same ch-3 sp and each ch-3 sp around, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [24 dc, 12 ch-3 sp]

Round 5 Join Yarn D in any ch-3 sp of Rnd 3 behind the ch-3 sp of Rnd 4, ch1 (does not count as st), (2dc, ch2) in same ch-3 sp and each ch-3 sp around always working behind Rnd 4, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [24 dc, 12 ch-2 sp]

Round 6 Join Yarn E in any ch-2 sp of Round 5, ch1 (does not count as st), dc in same sp, (4tr, ch1, 4tr) in next ch-2 sp, *dc in next ch-2 sp, (4tr, ch1, 4tr) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * 4 more times, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [6dc, 48 tr, 6 ch-1 sp]

Round 7 Join Yarn B in any ch-1 sp, ch1 (does not count as st), (dc, ch11) in same ch-1 sp and each ch-1 sp around, ss to first dc to join. [6dc, 6 ch-11 sp]

Round 8 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in same dc, *6dc in next ch-11 sp, ttr2tog over the two ch-3 sps of Rnd 4 directly below, 6dc in same ch-11 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * around omitting final dc, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [6 groups of (13 dc, ttr2tog)]

Round 9 Join Yarn C in first dc, ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st around, ss to first dc [84sts]

Round 10 Ch1 (does not count as st_ dc in same dc, *dc in next 2 dc, change to Yarn A, dc in next dc, change to Yarn C, dc in next 2 dc, 2dc in next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * around, omitting last dc, ss to first dc to join. [96 dc]

Round 11 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in same dc, *dc in next dc, change to Yarn A, dc in next 3 dc, change to Yarn C, dc in next 4 dc; rep from * around, omitting last dc, ss to first dc to join.

Round 12 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in same dc, *dc in next dc, change to Yarn A, dc in next dc, change to Yarn C, dc in next dc, change to Yarn A, dc in next dc, change to Yarn C, dc in next 4 dc; rep from * around, omitting last dc, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off Yarn A.

Round 13 Ch1 (does not count as st), 2dc in first dc, *dc in next 7 dc, 2dc in next dc; rep from * around, omitting last 2dc, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [108 dc]

Round 14 Join Yarn B in any dc, ch3 (counts as tr), tr in next 7 dc, 2tr in next dc, *tr in next 8 dc, 2tr in next dc; rep from * around, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join. [120 tr]

Round 15 Join Yarn D around post of any tr, working from behind Round 14; work 1dc around the posts of first 2 tr, ch1, *work 1dc around the posts of next 2tr, ch1; rep from * around, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off. [60 dc and 60 ch-1 sp]

Round 16 Join Yarn E in any ch-1 sp, ch1 (does not count as st), 2dc in same ch-1 sp, *skip next ch-1 sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-1 sp, skip next ch-1 sp, 2dc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, omitting last 2dc, ss to first dc to join.

Fasten off, weave in all ends and block.

Small Mandala Pattern

Work as for Large Mandala for Rounds 1-4 without fastening off Yarn B. [24 dc, 12 ch-3 sp]

Round 5 Ch1 (does not count as st), *6dc in ch-3 sp, dc between next 2 dc; rep from * around, ss to first dc to join. [84 dc]

Round 6 Join Yarn D in any ch-3 sp of Round 3 behind the ch-3 sp of Round 4, ch1 (does not count as st), (2dc, ch2) in same ch-3 sp and each ch-3 sp around, always working behind Round 4, ss to first dc to join.

Fasten off, weave in all ends and block.
