How to get involved in Granny Square Day 2024

The event was originally created in 2014 by the US crochet whizz Susan Regalia, who realised that Instagram’s iconic grid format could be used to replicate the patchwork arrangement of the classic granny square blanket online.

Others quickly caught onto the idea and so Granny Square Day way born – a chance for a worldwide community to come together and celebrate what they love.

“A blanket is a gift of comfort and love,” says Susan. “When any of us view or contribute some of these granny squares, it’s as though we join in a giant world hug with each other!”

Whether you’re new to crochet, or are a seasoned pro, it couldn’t be easier to get involved! Here's how to get involved in Granny Square Day

1. Take a photo of a granny square (a 4-round traditional granny works best but feel free to be as creative as you want)

2. Crop it so that the single square fills the entire screen of your post

3. Be sure to include the hashtag #grannysquareday2024 in the description of your Instagram post, as when viewing the hashtag the Instagram grid format assembles the squares into a virtual granny square blanket!

We love seeing all of your final granny square projects, so we’ve created a new hashtag as a dedicated place to share all of your fabulous makes! Not only will this be a great place to show off your inspiring projects and designs, but it will also help to keep the main #grannysquareday2024 hashtag dedicated to your brilliant squares!

And make sure you're following the Simply Crochet Instagram for all the latest updates and to see our squares on the day!

Granny Square Day ambassadors!

To help us celebrate Granny Square Day and spread the word of this fab online event, we enlist the help of some very special granny Square Day ambassadors. Here are the ambassadors taking part this year by sharing what they do on their social media sites:

Kelly Phelps- @craftandacuppa

Hi everyone I'm Kelly from Craft and a Cuppa. Would you believe that seeing a bright neon granny square one day in my Instagram feed made me realise that I had to learn how to make one myself.

Sewing was actually my first love (I wasn't too great at it but I enjoyed it and that's the main thing right!). Well as my family grew I had less space and energy to set up my sewing machine every night once my children had gone to bed. I then went a few years without creating and I missed it so much!

Then along came the bright neon granny square that instantly caught my attention. A few months later I had the basics to get me going and through pure determination and lots of YouTube tutorials, I finally mastered the Granny Square and the rest is history as they say!

I couldn't stop crocheting! It also fit perfectly around my family life as it was so easy to pick up (maybe a little hard to put down!) but it finally filled that huge creative gap that sewing had left behind. I absolutely love crochet and the huge supportive community that comes along with it.

I so looking foward to being an ambassador for this wonderful community event and meeting all of you there.

Sarah-Jane Hicks - @flo_and_dot

I’m Sarah-Jane, I live in Norfolk in the UK. I love to crochet and enjoy the process, it’s both mindful and fun, from choosing yarns and colours, designing patterns, right through to sewing in ends.

I was taught to crochet at a young age by my mum and my nan. I like the thought of a craft being passed down through the generations of a family, though I’m still waiting for my own daughter to want to learn!

About ten years ago I started to crochet again and soon became hooked. Through Instagram I discovered there was a community out there who love crochet as much as me.

Happy Homes was my first pattern published in Simply Crochet in 2015. Since then, I’ve been very lucky to design and collaborate with various magazines and craft companies, including Mollie Makes, Rico Design and Hobbycraft. A few years ago, I wrote my first crochet book (Amigurumi Christmas published by Search Press in 2020) and I’ve gone on to write five more books. The latest is to be published in August 2024.

I’m excited to be a Granny Square Ambassador and am looking forward to the big day! 😊.

Candy Downs - @hooked.on.candy

Hi there, I’m Candy from @hooked.on.candy

You may know me as an amigurumi designer but like many other crocheters my journey began with the humble Granny Square. My home is still full of the results with a colourful blanket draped over most chairs!

I have been crocheting for a very long time after being taught by my Nan at a young age.  She was more of a knitter but used to trim her finished pieces with beautiful crocheted lace and as they say I was hooked! She started by teaching me how to make a long chain with scraps of yarn and we went from there.

I love crocheting gifts for people whether that’s a cute amigurumi or something more practical like a scarf or a cardigan. I am proud to say I have made a blanket for every single baby I know including my own two!

Over the last few years I have been designing my own patterns and I couldn’t be more happy. It’s an amazing creative outlet and the crochet community is so supportive. Its wonderful to find so many like minded people who can fully appreciate my unique designs such as a watermelon crossed with a dinosaur!

I'll look forward to meeting you all on the Big Day! Can't wait!

Alice Tarry- @the_burrow_uk

Processed with MOLDIV

I am a mum of four, living in Buckinghamshire and have been teaching crochet face to face locally for over ten years, still running weekly lessons and drop in sessions. I began designing patterns for my classes, then at the end of 2021 decided to start publishing them online which has been a great success. I also joined Instagram at the same time and have made lots of lovely friends within the crochet community. I have also been thrilled to design for several crochet magazines, yarn companies, blogs and crochet along projects.

I get so much pleasure from teaching and supporting people to progress on their creative journeys. I am always keen to encourage people to learn new skills and have a go at different techniques. I have taught hundreds of people to crochet over the years; from 6 years old to 80+ years young. Crochet is such a diverse and creative craft and I like to push people to experiment and expand their skill set.

I also hope to inspire people to embrace colour and texture; be curious and creative and Granny Square Day is the perfect way to witness this in action. To see more of my work please visit my Instagram page: @the_burrow_uk
