Whatever time of year it is, we love the weight, comfort and softness of a hand-knitted throw. This chunky knit blanket pattern by Caroline Birkett was originally published as part of the supplement that came with Simply Knitting magazine issue 171. We love its mix of classic lace style with a band up-to-date mustard border, in a colour way that would work with any home. But you can easily switch yarn colours to make it match your decor, too.

Our chunky knit blanket pattern uses Rico Essentials Big yarn, which knits up in no time for the speediest of home knits! This yarn is available in a choice of six colours. S0 you could be able to find a shade that works for you. But you can always substitute in other chunky yarns if you prefer.     2 balls of Yarn A Saffron (32)
    14 balls of Yarn B Light Grey (22) 
  • A 7mm circular needle, 100cm long

Chunky knit blanket pattern tension

Yarn used knits as super chunky to this tension: 11 sts and 15 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over garter st using 7mm needles; 1 rep of Fern Lace Rib (20 sts) measures 16cm.

The Fern Lace Rib pattern creates a natural rippled effect at the top and bottom of the blanket.

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 *P8, K2; rep to last 8 sts before border P8.

Row 3 *K3tog, K3, yo, K1, yo, K1, P2, K1, yo, K1, yo, K3, sk2po, P2; rep from * 5 more times, k3tog, K3, yo, K1, yo, K1, P2, K1, yo, K1, yo, K3, sk2po.

Chunky knit blanket pattern

Cast on 146 sts using 7mm needles and Yarn A.

Knit 7 rows.

From now on the first and last 4 sts will be worked in Yarn A, and the sts in between worked in Yarn B. Use the intarsia method, using a different ball of Yarn A for each end, twisting the yarns where they meet Yarn B.

Set up row (WS) K4B, P to last 4 sts in Yarn A, K4B.

Row 1 K4B, work Row 1 of Fern Lace Rib pattern to last 4 sts, K4B.

Row 2 K4B, work Row 1 of Fern Lace Rib pattern to last 4 sts, K4B.

Last 2 rows set pattern placement for garter stitch edges and Fern Lace Rib pattern.

Cont to work in patterns as set, working through Rows 1-10 of Fern Lace Rib pattern until Blanket measures approx. 100cm from cast-on edge, finishing on a Row 10.

Break Yarn B and continue in Yarn A.

Knit 6 rows.

Cast off.

Weave in your loose ends and gently block to measurements, following any yarn care instructions on the ball band.
