Our terrific trio of penguins love having fun in the snow together, and you’ll have loads of fun hooking up these cute characters designed by Becky Schooley.

They’re the perfect project for crocheters that are new to amigurumi, as they only use simple UK double crochet stitches and the largest penguin measures only 10cm tall.

Why not hook them up as little Christmas gifts for your work colleagues? You could even turn the small penguin into a cute amigurumi keyring.

New to amigurumi? Make sure to read these notes before starting this penguin crochet pattern.

The pattern is worked using the amigurumi method, where you work in a continuous spiral without closing off the round with a slip stitch. It may help to use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round, moving it up as you work. When you fasten off make sure to leave long tails of yarn to use in sewing up later. You can find some helpful tips and tricks in our how to crochet amigurumi guide.

A few more things to keep in mind with this penguin project

This crochet pattern is written in UK terminology, but if you’re unsure of any of the stitch names or are used to US patterns, you can find a full list of helpful information in our abbreviations and conversions guide.

Tension is not important for this project, but you’ll want to make sure your stitches are tight enough so that you avoid big holes where stuffing can show through. If you are finding obvious holes in your crochet, try going down a hook size.

First let’s start with the body and head

With Atlantic, make a crochet magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 6dc into loop. [6 dc]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 dc]

Round 3 (2dc in next st, 1dc in next st) 6 times. [18 dc]

Round 4 (2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times. [24 dc]

Round 5 (2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts) 6 times. [30 dc]

Round 6 (2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts) 6 times. [36 dc]

Rounds 7-11 Dc in each st around.

Round 12 (Dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 2 sts) 9 times. [27 dc]

Rounds 13-15 Dc in each st around.

Round 16 (Dc2tog, 1dc in next st) 9 times. [18 dc]

Round 17 Dc in each st around.

Stuff Body and (if using) attach safety eyes at this point and then continue.

Round 18 (Dc2tog) around. [9 dc]

Fasten off and sew up the head.

Step 2

Now it’s time to give your penguin its wings!

With Atlantic, make a crochet magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc into loop. [6 dc]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 dc]

Round 4 (2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times, ss to first dc. [24 dc]

Fasten off.

Fold Wing in half and seam edges together. Squash flat so that the seam is underneath the wing and the centre of the circle is seen on top.

Repeat to make a second wing.

Step 3

Adding a simple tummy patch will give your penguin that distinctive look

With Ecru, work as given for Wings up to the end of Round 4. Fasten off.

Sew flat onto the body (without folding in half), positioning so the bottom of the circle sits where shaping for the body begins.

Step 4

Now let’s make their two happy feet!

With Florence, make a crochet magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc into loop. [6 dc]

Round 2 (2dc in next st, 1dc in next st) 3 times. [9 dc]

Rounds 3-4 Dc in each st around.

Round 5 (Dc2tog, 1dc in next st) 3 times. [6 dc]

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Don’t stuff, squash flat and leave open. Sew feet at base of the body, either side of the tummy patch.

Fold flat, don’t stuff, pull the middle of the circle into a point.
Sew to the body above the tummy patch, so that it hangs over slightly.

Step 6

Now let’s finish our large penguin!

Sew wings to the side of the body, on the same round as the beak.
If using black beads for eyes, sew on approx 3 rounds above beak.

Don’t stop now - let’s get straight onto making our medium penguin!
