You will need

Stylecraft Naturals Organic Cotton (100% cotton, 50g/105m) or alternative DK cotton yarn,

4 balls of Yarn A Gypsum (7168) - White

2 balls of each:

  • Yarn B Blue Lagoon (7197) - Blue
  • Yarn C Citronelle (7175) - Yellow
  • Yarn D Seagreen (7192) - Green
  • Yarn E Amethyst (7185) - Purple
  • Yarn F Flamingo (7179) - Hot Pink

A 4mm (US G/6) hook

A 4.5mm (US 7) hook

Stiff wire for outside brim (optional)

Please note - This pattern was originally made in Stylecraft Classique Cotton yarn, but unfortunately certain shades used in this pattern have since been discontinued. We have amended this pattern to use Stylecraft Naturals Organic cotton yarn instead and have adjusted the required yarn quantities accordingly.

Measurements

40cm (15¾in) total diameter - 15cm (6in) depth Circumference of hat around head measures 55cm (21½in)

Sizing variation

For smaller heads, use 4mm hook up to Row 34, or stop short of Round 21 and then go on to Rounds 22 to 34.

Tension

17 sts and 22 rows measure 10cm (4in) with a 4.5mm hook.

Using 4.5mm hook and Yarn A make a crochet magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as first st throughout), 6dc into loop, ss in first dc to join. [6 sts]

Round 3 Ch1, (dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc) around, ss in top of first dc. [18 sts]

Round 4 Ch1, (dc in next 2 dc, 2dc in next dc) around, ss in first dc. [24 sts]

Round 5 Ch1, (dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in next dc) around, ss in first dc. [30 sts]

Rounds 6-11 Continue working in the same fashion, increasing 6 sts every round. [66 sts]

Round 12 Ch1, dc in each dc around, ss in first dc.

Round 13 Ch1, (dc in next 10 dc, 2dc in next dc) around, ss in first dc. [72 sts]

Round 14 Ch1, dc in each dc around, ss in first dc.

Rounds 17-21 Increase 6 sts in the same fashion on Round 17, and the following 2 alternate rounds. [96 sts]

If you would like to stiffen the brim, thread wire through the stitches on the WS on the next row of the brim.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
