Coming soon, down a chimney near you, it’s our very jolly crochet Father Christmas! This crochet Santa pattern has a traditional look – dressed head to toe in red and white, with smart black boots and a matching belt, he’s a classic Santa, amigurumi style! Sit him on the mantelpiece to greet the real Santa on his way in, or on a toy shelf to let children know that Father Christmas is always watching to see if they’re naughty or nice! This free crochet Santa pattern would also make a fab stocking filler too!

You will need

DMC Natura Just Cotton (or alternative 4ply yarn), 1 ball each in:

  • Yarn A - Nacar (N35) – Cream
  • Yarn B - Ibiza (N01) – White
  • Yarn C - Passion (N23) – Red
  • Yarn D - Noir (N11) – Black

A 2.5mm (US C/2 or B/1) crochet hook

Yarn needle

Sewing needle and invisible thread (or matching colour thread)

Toy stuffing

2 x 5mm safety eyes

2 x 8mm black buttons

1cm diameter bell

Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and in next 2 ch, (dc in next 4ch, 2dc in next ch); rep 2 times, dc in next 3 ch, turn. Rejoin Yarn D with ss in first st of last row. Round 9 Ch1, dc along side of row, over unworked 3 sts of round 6, and along other side, join with ss into first dc made. Use the tail from end of Row 10 to sew up the seam at the end of the boot.

To make up

Insert safety eyes into head and stuff. Position beard in place on head and sew into place with thread, sewing along the sides of row and starting chain edge only. Position moustache in place and sew to head with a few stitches in the middle of moustache. Firmly stuff body, and using thread sew buckle to the black band and sew the two buttons above the buckle. Use the long tail left on the end of body to sew the body to the bottom of the head. Sew arms to side of body. Roll a very small amount of stuffing into a ball and place in toe of each boot. Firmly stuff leg and place into boot (if you’re struggling use your hook to push it in). Use tail of leg to sew legs to body. Sew bell to end of hat.
