What is an advent calendar?

From simple card calendars where the doors open to reveal a picture, to classic advent calendars with daily chocolates, or even modern specialist calendars that are filled with all sorts of expensive goodies, advent calendars come in a wide range of styles.

Advent calendars are traditionally used to count down the days to Christmas. In the Christian faith ‘Advent’ marks the period of waiting for the birth of Jesus, known as the Nativity.

While the Advent period officially starts on the first Sunday of Advent which can fall between November 27th and December 3rd, most modern advent calendars start from the 1st December and run up to the 24th or the 25th.

DIY advent calendar

While advent calendars have their origins in Christianity, nowadays they’re used by both religious and secular people to add a bit of excitement leading up to Christmas day.

Most advent calendars you will come across will have a Christmas theme, but plenty of other faiths have their own countdowns and calendars. Of course you can get creative and customise any of our DIY advent calendars to suit your own celebration.

For example, you could make a calendar made up of eight days to commemorate the Jewish festival Hanukkah, or Muslims can increase the days to mark the 29 or 30 days of Rammadan.

Whatever your reason for buying or making a DIY advent calendar, they’re generally used to educate children and prepare them for an upcoming special day or event.

What are the benefits of a DIY advent calendar?

Making an advent calendar yourself means that you have complete control of what’s inside!

Many DIY advent calendars have pockets or compartments for you to insert your own chosen daily gifts, meaning you can really customise it to your recipient. This makes it far more special and unique than a shop-bought calendar.

This is particularly useful if you want to include healthier snacks for kids, or ensure your calendar won’t contain anything that could trigger allergies.

Or you can skip the sweet things altogether and insert gifts that will encourage daily creativity or small toys to keep little ones busy in the lead up to Christmas.

They can also make a heartfelt and even romantic gift for a loved one. You don’t have to spend a fortune on gifts to put inside – simply write a special message or poem for each day to show them how much you care.

However, the main reason that we’re so passionate about DIY advent calendars is their sustainability! A handmade calendar can be reused again and again each year, in fact they often become treasured family heirlooms. After all, what could be more magical than having your own custom calendar to open!
