Jazzy dots and bright stripy bows make Caroline Warren’s crochet Easter basket fun, jolly and all ready for swallow up lots of chocolate goodies. Caroline originally designed this crochet easter basket for the Simply Crochet Hook to Hook designer challenge from issue 95, and now we're bringing it to you as a Free Easter basket crochet pattern below! Although it's perfect for storing your chocolate eggs, we think this crochet Easter basket would make a great storage solution for the whole year round - how about using it to store your yarny bits, or even as a houseplant pot cover!

You will need

Paintbox Yarns Recycled Big Cotton (60% cotton, 40% polyester, 250g, 90m), 1 ball of Yarn A Off White (001)

Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran (100% cotton, 50g, 85m), 1 ball of each:

  • Yarn B Seville Orange (619)
  • Yarn C Sky Blue (639)
  • Yarn D Buttercup Yellow (623)
  • Yarn E Blush Pink (654)
  • Yarn F Spearmint Green (626)

A 5mm (US H/8) hook
A 9mm (US M/13) hook

Tension is not critical for this project

Basket measures 18cm (7in) in diameter

Abbreviations

5-tr cl Change to 5mm hook and use yarn specified, *yrh, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, yrh, pull through 2 loops; rep from * 4 times more, change to Yarn A, yrh and pull through all loops on hook, change to 9mm hook

Notes

Crochet Easter Basket is made in rounds using Yarn A as the main colour and a 9mm hook. The contrasting bobbles are worked as 5-tr clusters with a 5mm hook (see Abbreviations). Carry unused colour and enclose the strand in the sts as you go. Bows are made separately and joined at the end.

Free Easter basket crochet pattern

Base

Using a 9mm hook and Yarn A, make a crochet magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as a tr throughout), 11tr into loop, ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts]
Round 2 Ch3, tr in st at base of ch-3, 2tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [24 sts]
Round 3 Ch3, tr in st at base of ch-3, tr in next st, (2tr in next st, tr in next st) 11 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [36 sts]
Round 4 Ch3, tr in st at base of ch-3, tr in next 2 sts, (2tr in next st, tr in next 2 sts) 11 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [48 sts]

Round 5 Ch1 (does not count as a st throughout), dc in bl of each st around, ss to beg dc.

Continue with Yarn A and carry Yarn B for the 5-tr cl sts.

Round 6 Ch1, dc in first 5 sts, (5-tr cl in next st, dc in next 5 sts) 7 times, 5-tr cl in final st, ss to beg dc.

Fasten off Yarn B and carry Yarn C.

Round 7 Ch1, dc in first 2 sts, (5-tr cl in next st, dc in next 5sts) 7 times, 5-trcl in next st, dc in next 3 sts, ss to beg dc.

Fasten off Yarn B and carry Yarn D.

Round 8 As Round 6.
Round 9 As Round 7, using Yarn E as the contrast colour.
Round 10 As Round 6, using Yarn F as contrast colour.
Round 11 As Round 7, using Yarn B as contrast colour.
Round 12 As Round 6, using Yarn C as contrast colour.
Round 13 Ch1, dc in next 9 sts, ch6, skip 6 sts, dc in next 18 sts, ch6, skip 6 sts, dc in final 9 sts, ss to beg dc. [36 sts, 2 ch-6 sps]
Round 14 Ch1, *dc in each st to ch-6 sp, 6dc in ch-sp; rep from * once more, dc in each st to end, ss to beg dc. [48 sts]
Round 15 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to beg dc.

Bow (Make 2)

Using a 5mm hook and Yarn C, ch81.

Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [80 sts]

Change to Yarn D.

Row 2 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 3-5 As Row 2 using Yarn B, Yarn E and Yarn F in order.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tie into a Bow shape and sew over Rounds 14-15, positioning them above the handles.
