Sara Huntington’s pretty crochet butterfly pattern is a quick and easy project that you can hook up in an evening. We've included instructions for how to turn them into fabulous crochet butterfly magnets, but there's nothing to stop you getting creative and using them however you like! They'd make gorgeous crochet butterfly keyrings or beautiful butterfly embellishments on a bag! You will need

Oddments of DK yarn in the following shades (if you need some yarn you could try the bargain 20g balls of Sirdar Happy Cotton):

  • Yarn A Light Blue
  • Yarn B Turquoise
  • Yarn C Blue
  • Yarn D Orange

A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook

Felt circle, 2cm diameter

Fabric glue

Magnet

Measurements

Using Yarn A, ch6, ss in 6th ch from hook to form a ring.

Round 1 Ch3 (counts as tr), 15 tr into ring, ss to top of ch-3 changing to Yarn B on yrh of the ss. [16 sts]

Round 2 Using Yarn B, ch3 (counts as tr), tr in space between 2 sts from Rnd 1, ch2, 2tr into same sp, skip 2 tr, working in the sp between tr sts work: *2tr, ch2, 2tr into same sp, skip 2 tr; rep from * 6 more times, ss to top of ch-3, ss in next tr, ss into the ch-2 sp changing to Yarn C on yrh of the ss. [8 ch-2 sps]

Round 3 Using Yarn C, ch3 (counts as tr), 6tr into same ch-2 sp, skip 2 tr, *ss into next sp between sts, 7tr into next ch-2 sp; rep from * 6 more times, ss to top beg ch-3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fold shape in half (WS tog) matching 7tr shells. Using Yarn D, ch9. Fasten off. Using Yarn D and tapestry needle, sew a ch st down centre of fold, starting at Round 3 edge. At top (Round 1 edge) secure the 9ch length through the 5th ch to form antennae. Fasten off.

Trim antennae ends. Glue felt and magnet to back of butterfly.
