Halloween is fast approaching and it’s the only time of the year where you may wish to cover yourself or the kids with blood and gore! There are lots of fake blood products on the market but did you know it's super simple to make yourself?

You can create kid-friendly fake blood from store cupboard ingredients in just a few minutes. Made from natural ingredients, our fake blood recipe is terrifyingly easy to make.

You can make very runny blood, suitable for splattering on clothes or a thicker version that's perfect for smearing around mouths, adding to wounds or dripping over home decor items. It sounds yucky but it’s really good fun!

You will need:

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Water
  • Red and blue food colouring (These come in liquid or paste varieties. Both can be used for these recipes but liquid food colouring is mixed in quicker.)
  • Flour (Flour is used to thicken the blood. Any flour is fine, including corn flour. You can also use icing sugar but children may be tempted to eat it!)

Step 1

Pour a small amount of water into a bowl. Pour in some red food colouring then mix well. Be quite generous with the food colouring to achieve a rich colour.

Step 2

Once thoroughly mixed, add a few drops of blue food colouring then mix again. This will darken down the bright red colour to achieve a more realistic blood colour.

If the mixture still looks quite bright then add a few more drops of blue food colouring.

Ideally, it should be the consistency of a sauce but it can be made thicker if preferred.

Step 5

The blood is now ready to be applied to where it’s required. Spoon a generous amount of blood where it is needed so the blood drips. This works well around mouths and wounds particularly.

Tip – if you wish to add a few fleshy bits to your blood then add some onion flakes or a few porridge oats.
