You will need

  • Stylecraft Special DK (100% acrylic, 100g/295m), or alternative DK yarn, 1 ball of each: 
    • Mocha (1064)
    • Dandelion (1856) 
    • Meadow (1065)
  • A small amount of any light pink yarn
  • Black stranded cotton
  • A 3.75mm (US F/5) hook
  • 2 safety eyes, 14mm
  • Toy stuffing
  • A wooden dowel or chopstick (approx 25cm long)

Tension

Tension is not critical, but it may affect the yarn quantities required


Measurements

Sunflower measures approx 30cm (11¾in) tall


Abbreviations

Notes

Parts of this pattern are worked using the amigurumi method. Work in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a ss. You may find it helpful to place a marker in the first st of each round, moving it up as you go. 

This item is not suitable as a toy for a child under 36 months due to the inclusion of potentially hazardous parts.


Free sunflower crochet pattern

Step 1

Sunflower centre

Using Mocha, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a st throughout), 6dc in loop. [6 sts]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]

Round 3 (1dc, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 (2dc, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 5 (3dc, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [30 sts]

Round 6 (4dc, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [36 sts]

Round 7 (5dc, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [42 sts]

Rounds 8-9 Dc in each st around.

Insert safety eyes between Rounds 4-5, approx 10 sts apart. Using light pink, embroider the cheeks. Using black stranded cotton, embroider the mouth.

Rounds 10-11 Dc in each st around. Change to Meadow.

Round 12 (5dc, inv dec) 6 times. [36 sts]

Round 13 (4dc, inv dec) 6 times. [30 sts]

Round 14 (3dc, inv dec) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 15 (2dc, inv dec) 6 times. [18 sts] Stuff as you work.

Round 16 (1dc, inv dec) 6 times. [12 sts]

Round 17 (Inv dec) 6 times. [6 sts]

Fasten off. Thread tail through fl of final 6 sts and pull tight to close.


Step 2

Sunflower petals (make 8)

Using Dandelion, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 4dc in loop. [4 sts]

Round 2 2dc in next st, dc in each st around. [5 sts]

Round 3 2dc in each st around. [10 sts]

Round 4 Dc in each st around.

Round 5 (1dc, 2dc in next st) 5 times. [15 sts]

Round 6 (2dc, 2dc in next st) 5 times. [20 sts]

Round 7 (4dc, 2dc in next st) 4 times. [24 sts]

Rounds 8-13 Dc in each st around.

Round 14 (1dc, inv dec) 8 times. [16 sts]

Round 15 (Inv dec) 8 times.

Round 16 (Inv dec) 4 times. [4 sts]

Fasten off. Thread tail through fl of final 4 sts and pull tight to close.

Step 3

Sunflower stem

Using Meadow, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc in loop. [6 sts]

Round 2 Dc in each st around.

Rep Round 2 until Stem measures length of wooden dowel or chopstick.

Fasten off. Place a small amount of stuffing into the Stem and insert the wooden dowel, pushing the stuffing to the base. Sew the top of the Stem closed.


Step 4

Leaves (make 2)

Using Meadow, make a magic loop.

Rounds 1-5 (RS) As Rounds 1-5 of Petals. [15 sts]

Rounds 6-8 Dc in each st around.

Round 9 (Dc in next st, inv dec) 5 times. [10 sts]

Round 10 (Inv dec) 5 times.

Fasten off. Thread tail through fl of final 5 sts and pull tight to close.


Step 5

Assembly

Sew the Petals to the Centre, over Rounds 10-11.

Sew the Stem to the back of the Centre.

Sew the Leaves to the Stem.

Weave in any rem ends.
