How to make a passport cover

Planning your summer holidays? Don’t forget your passport! Leanne Garrity is here to make sure your passport is the prettiest one in the airport. Passport covers are great for protecting your passport from sticky surfaces and for spotting amongst all your luggage, snacks, and bags. Leanne's lovely and super simple passport cover pattern is made from leftover Liberty fabric which means it's not only affordable and a great stash buster but it's also drop dead gorgeous. You could make your passport cover from leftover fabrics in your stash or, if you want to go the extra step, using fabric that matches your airport outfit and luggage. Make a matching luggage tag and crochet floppy sun hat and you're ready for your travels.

You’ll need…

• Outer fabric, 22x15cm (8¾ x 6”) • Felt lining, 22x15cm (8¾ x 6”) • 2 x pocket fabric pieces, 8 x1 5cm (3⅛ x 6”) • 2 x felt lining for pockets, 8 x 15cm (3⅛ x 6”) • 4 x suede right triangles, 8x8 x 11cm (3⅛ x 3⅛ x 4⅜”)

Passport cover pattern

You will need:

  • Fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread

Step 1

Place the triangles 3½cm (1⅜”) in from the corners of the outer fabric, right sides facing. The hypotenuse of the triangle should face the corner of the outer fabric. Pin and sew. Press and sew a top stitch. Trim the ends.

Step 2

Place outer fabric and felt lining together, right sides facing. Sew, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then tuck the opening seams inside. Press and hand stitch the opening closed.

Step 3

Place the pocket pieces and felt lining together, right sides facing. Sew, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then tuck the opening seams inside. Press and hand stitch the opening closed. Sew a top stitch along one length of each pocket.

 

Step 4

Lay the pockets at each short edge of the outer fabric, wrong sides facing. The top-stitched edge of the pocket should face inwards. Whip stitch the top, side and bottom edges in place.
