Autumn is officially the most wonderful time of the year when it comes to crafting cosy makes and gifts for our families, so whether you’re on the hunt for craft supplies to get your kids into making, or you’re in need of some new yarn or fabric to fuel your Fall craft spree, this guide is for you.
Where to buy cheap craft supplies
It’s easy to overlook this high street store when you’re shopping in town for physical supplies for your stash (they’ll never replace a local yarn shop or haberdashery for their in house expertise or range of specialist products), but you’ll be surprised how many craft supplies basics they have available in their online store, and they offering a surprisingly large collection of basics for many of our favourite crafts. Their range includes cheap deals on everything from die-cutting machines and dies to paper and card and Art supplies.
If you haven’t yet dived in, Baker Ross is an incredible resource for family craft supplies – offering a mix of tried trusted basics (from tissue paper to cardstock) alongside seasonal craft kits that will keep young families entertained for hours. This is a tried and tested recommendation – we truly love their seasonal craft kits here on the Gathered team – they offer a huge range of creative kits for all the major occasions and their supplies are always good value too. Their sand art kits alone have entertained our team’s mini makers for hours on end.
The megastores of the UK craft scene, Hobbycraft also boasts a huge collection of cheap craft supplies in their online store to rival their local craft meccas, with a constantly changing set of special offers and bargains to help you source your craft stash for less. It’s hard to sum up all they have to offer in this one post but let’s start with mini sewing machines from £50, fat quarter fabrics from around £1.50 per quarter, and a huge range of yarns with prices starting from £1.20 a ball. Don’t even get us started on their papercraft pens.
Until recently, Wilko were the shop we all went to for all our household essentials, from ironing board covers to cheap toiletries, but they were hardly top of our list for craft shopping. Yet they’ve been quietly growing their collection of Arts and Crafts supplies in recent years and they now offer a surprisingly varied collection of essential craft stash, all affordably priced. They’re our go to place for fabric dies for tie-dying, have a handy range of paints and spray paints, and have a really great set of kids craft kits which would make cheap Christmas gifts for mini makers. We like their Tub of Beads for £3 and Paint your own piggy bank kit (£3).
The site that built it’s name selling beautiful homemade items from independent makers has changed somewhat in recent years, and it’s still our go-to place for finding unique handmade gifts if we run out of time to make our own. But have you tried shopping for craft supplies on Etsy too? From individual stash items to tempting craft kits, they’ve got a unique range that stays in keeping with the brand’s spirit of championing makers of all ages. We are especially partial to their affordable beginner craft kits, which are a nice introduction to new crafts without you having to invest a month’s pay to commit to getting all the supplies in before you’ve tried it. Personal favourites include this DIY Macrame Plant Hanger kit (£11.95) or this Lino Print and Stamp Kit (£12.00) (which is topping our Christmas list for Santa this year).
They may be more famous for selling your unwanted video games than they are as an Arts and Crafts shop, but with a bit of practise at where to look you can bag yourself some bargains the next time you’re shopping for stash on Ebay. Opt to search the whole site for a specific item (we often find good thread deals on ebay) or browse their curated collections by craft – Sewing, Papercrafts, Jewellery making or Needlecrafts & yarn to name a few. While they can’t compete with your local haberdashery or yarn shop for trusted expertise and high-end products, they may well surprise you if you’re looking for a cheap, quick stash top up. Plus the eBay Money Back Guarantee protects you from rogue sellers so you can shop with confidence.
Yes, we know, you can buy anything on Amazon, and here at Gathered we always support smaller stores and independent shops in our local area wherever possible, but there’s always the odd time when inspiration strikes and we want to get making, when we can’t quite resist a quick rummage for cheap craft supplies in the internet’s biggest store. They’ve got everything from sewing machines to die-cutting machines and with so many retailers using the platform, you can usually find your favourite brands on there too, from Trimcraft to Brother. Look for retailers who are in your region to avoid long waits for delivery from overseas and check user reviews and the full product description before you buy, but used wisely, Amazon has a place in your “shops to try” list, especially if you’re on the hunt for cheap craft supplies.
As well as making and distributing their own popular collection of craft supplies, from paper cutters to stamp sets, Crafter’s Companion have grown hugely as an online retailer over recent years to stock over 100 craft brands including Hunkydory and Spectrum Noir. At the time of writing they’ve got a great End of Summer Sale on with up to 70% off a big range of dies, nesting dies, embossing folders and stamps (prices start at £1).
