There's so mush-room in our hearts for this beautiful mushroom embroidery designed by Maggie Magoo! The mustard fabric and the colourful mushrooms give us a gorgeous autumnal vibe. It reminds us of pulling on the fluffy socks, sitting down with a hot chocolate, and getting into a good stitching session whilst the rain pours outside, bliss. You can remind yourself of that feeling every day with this lovely design hanging in your home, or give it as a thoughtful gift to a friend who loves autumn.

The design contains an array of beautiful mushrooms each one with it's own style and personality! This will be a really fun stitch and unique piece of art to hang up on the wall.

  • Embroidery hoop: 12cm diameter

Free mushroom embroidery template

You’ll also need the free mushroom embroidery template.

You will need:

  • Cotton fabric
  • Stranded cotton
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Basic embroidery kit

Step 1

Transfer the mushroom design from the template onto the fabric using your preferred method. We used a lightbox and an erasable pen

Step 2

Use three strands for all the embroidery, completing one toadstool at a time and referring to the photos for colours, or choose your own.

Step 3

Work the solid filled toadstool caps in Satin Stitch. Also work the spots using Satin Stitch. To add details, use Fishbone Stitch on the orange toadstool and Seed Stitch inside the swirly toadstool, and on the light green toadstool.

Step 4

Use Backstitch or Straight Stitch for the stems and gills that are unfilled.

Step 5

For the solid stems, use Satin Stitch worked horizontally to fill the area.

Step 6

For the blue and white toadstool on the bottom right, fill the cap with white Satin Stitch, then work diagonal Straight Stitch lines on top in blue. Fill the stem with dark green Satin Stitch.

Maggie Magoo

Contemporary artist and maker

Carole, aka Maggie Magoo Designs, creates contemporary artwork inspired by the natural world, folk art, and mid-century design. Plants, flowers, and insects feature throughout. Autumn, with all its glorious colours, is Carole’s favourite season, so she was especially happy to be asked to contribute autumnal issues of Love Embroidery. As much of Carole’s art is designed digitally, the slow pace of embroidery a relaxing contrast. Carole started out studying for a degree in surface pattern design and printed textiles at Leeds College of Art. From there worked for Hallmark Cards as a greetings card designer for almost 20 years.
