There aren’t many things that are cuter than a baby, but we reckon this cosy, star-emblazoned baby blanket comes a close second. Mandy O’Sullivan shows you how to crochet a baby blanket with pictures making this project a super simple one to recreate. Mandy's crochet baby blanket is worked in the softest chenille-style yarn and it’ll keep your little ‘un as snug as a bug in a rug, and look adorable doing it. If you’ve never tried corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet, you’re in for a treat. Using a series of small squares to create a pattern, you’ll begin at one corner, then work towards the opposite corner, following the chart to build a grid of tiles in different yarn shades. As C2C crochet uses basic techniques, the style is easy enough to learn. It might help to mark off each diagonal row on the chart as you go through, and to practise the C2C stitch before you dive into the design itself. Need some more help?   • Bernat Baby Blanket Big Ball, 100% polyester, 300g/234m per ball, three balls in White (4005) (Yarn A) and one ball in Peachy (4510) (Yarn B)
  • 10mm (UK 000, US N/15) crochet hook (find the best crochet hooks on the market in our round-up)
  • DK yarn in pink (Yarn C), 1m (393/8“)
  • Yarn needle

How to crochet a baby blanket step by step with pictures

This blanket uses the C2C stitch pattern, starting at one corner and working diagonally in treble blocks to the opposite corner. Follow the colour scheme in the chart, reading diagonally from the bottom right to the top left. Each square represents one block of 4tr. Change colour on the last pull through of the last st in the previous colour. Drop the previous colour and pick it up when needed again (usually the next row). If the colour doesn’t fall in the correct spot, ss through stitches to work the yarn into position. Tension isn’t important – just keep the blocks even so they align.

Row 1 ch6, 1tr in the 4th ch from hook (3ch missed counts as 1tr). 1tr in each of next 2ch [1 block of 4tr].

Row 2 turn your work, ch6. 1tr in the 4th ch from hook (3chmissed counts as 1tr), 1tr in each of next 2ch. ss into 3ch-sp from previous row. ch3 (counts as 1tr), 3tr in the 3ch-sp from previous
row [2 blocks of 4tr].

Step 3

Row 3 turn your work, ch6, 1tr in the 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2ch (block made), ss in 3ch-sp from previous row, ch3, 3tr in 3ch-sp from previous row, * ss in 3ch-sp from next block of previous row, ch3, 3tr in 3ch-sp of block in previous row * [3 blocks of 4tr].

Subsequent rows work as in Row 3, repeating between * as many times as needed across row. There will be one additional block at the end of each row.

Step 5

When desired width is reached, work Decrease Row.
Decrease Row turn your work, ss in each of first 3tr and in first 3ch-sp, ch3, 3tr in same 3ch-sp, now continue to make your treble blocks as normal.

Step 1

Rows 1-12 using Yarn A, work C2C.

Step 2

Row 13 continue to make blocks using Yarn A until you reach the 5th block of this row. This block is where the colour changes to Yarn B to make the bottom right leg of the star pattern.

Change to Yarn B on the last part of the last tr in block five and drop Yarn A (do not cut). Using Yarn B, ss into top of next 3ch, ch3, 3tr in the same 3ch-sp. Change to Yarn A and drop Yarn B. You will now have three balls of yarn attached – two balls of Yarn A either side of Yarn B. Continue to finish the row as normal with the new ball of Yarn A.

Step 3

Rows 14-37 continue to work the rows, changing colours where indicated on the chart, starting to decrease at Row 23 on lower left corner and at Row 29 on the top right corner.

Note: on Rows 33 and 34 you will need three sections of Yarn A and two of Yarn B, on these you can just ss across the back of the work to move your yarn into the correct position.

Step 4

Rows 38-51 continue to decrease with Yarn A until row 51.
Finish with a ss, cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in all remaining ends.

Finishing crochet baby blanket

Step 1

To make a pom pom, wrap Yarn B around your hand 20-30 times. Slip the loop off your hand, then secure around the middle with a length of Yarn C. Cut the loops, trim to neaten, then use the Yarn C to tie it to the corner of the blanket. Repeat for the remaining three corners.
