Heartthrob Harry Styles has always been a fashion icon. He’s worn some incredible pieces in the past but when he dressed up in handmade knitted and crochet clothing, our love for him rocketed to a whole new level.

The now famous Harry Styles cardigan was first spotted in rehearsal for The Today Show. Originally designed by British brand JW Anderson, this knitted patchwork cardigan has become one of 2022’s most talked about pieces of clothing. So talked about in fact, it’s now on display in the V&A Museum in London.

The world went crazy for oversized crochet cardigans overnight, with designer Liv Huffman leading the trend on Tik Tok. Her Harry Styles cardigan pattern went viral, uniting crafters and fans through colourful crochet.

Harry Styles cardigan pattern: The full guide

Important tips before you start crocheting the cardi!

This oversized crochet cardigan is made up of 85 multicoloured squares, with 5 x 5 squares joined for the back, 2 x 5 squares for each front and 4 x 5 squares for each sleeve.

After joining, cuffs are made and added to the bottom, and a button/neck band is made and added all around the front openings and neck.

For tension, you’ll need 14 double crochet stitches and 14 double crochet rows over 10cm (4in) using 5mm (US size H/8) crochet hook.

Step 1

Start by making the colourful cardigan squares!

Make 85 squares in total. 8 squares in one colour and 7 in every other square colour.

Using any square colour, chain stitch 16.

Row 1: Make 1 double crochet (dc) in second chain from hook, then 1 dc in each chain to end, turn. [15dc total]

Rows 2–15: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch throughout), 1 dc in each stitch to end, turn.

Fasten off.

Step 2

Let’s join those squares together to make your cardigan

Arrange 25 squares into a panel of 5 x 5 for the back.

For each front panel of the cardigan, arrange 10 squares into a panel 2 wide x 5 long. For each sleeve, arrange 20 squares into a panel 4 wide x 5 long.

Move the squares around until you are happy with the colour arrangement.

Using a yarn needle and main colour, sew squares together into arranged panels following the diagram above. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Step 3

Now let’s make your cardigan’s sleeves

Using a magic ring, chain (ch) 11.

Row 1: 1 dc in second chain from hook, 1 dc in each ch to end, turn. [10 dc]

Rows 2–30: Ch1 (does not count as stitch throughout), 1 dc back loop in each stitch to end, turn.

Fasten off.

Sew short ends of cuff together. Sew a cuff to each sleeve end using a yarn needle and main colour, at a rate of 2 sleeve stitches to 1 stitch of cuff.

 

Step 4

Crocheting your cardigan’s bottom hem

Using magic loop, ch11.

Row 1: 1 dc in second ch from hook, 1 dc in each ch to end, turn. [10dc]

Rows 2–89: Ch1, 1 dc back loop in each stitch to end, turn.

Fasten off.

Sew bottom hem to bottom of cardigan using a yarn needle and main colour, at a rate of approx. 3 cardigan stitches to 2 stitches of bottom hem.

Step 5

Finish off your Harry Styles cardigan by crocheting the button/neck band

Row 1: Join main colour to bottom right-hand corner of cardigan opening, ch1 (does not count as stitch throughout), work double crochet evenly along edge from bottom right-hand corner, to bottom left-hand corner, turn.

Rows 2 and 3: Ch1, 1 dc in each st to end, turn.

Mark position of 5 buttonholes evenly on one side of the front band.

Row 4: Ch1, (1dc in each stitch to buttonhole, ch2, skip 2 stitches) 5 times, 1 dc in each stitch to end, turn.

Row 5: Ch1, 1 dc in each stitch and ch to end, turn.

Row 6: Ch1, 1 dc in each stitch to end.

Fasten off and sew in all yarn ends.

Sew on buttons opposite to buttonholes.
